The first in the series is Mr Rick Baker the creative guy behind all things POP.
Name:
My names Rick Baker, I'm 24 years old and I live in Melbourne, Australia.
What you do:
Well I gave myself the title of Creative Director. But I don't really know what that means. I create and run a free-press publication called POP Magazine that focuses on snowboarders, skateboarders and surfers. Although POP has a website and also producers films and a whole bunch of other things. POP is based in Australia and is myself, my twin brother Drew and our business partner David Keating.
My top 3 places to shred?
1. Brighton. For the most part I love being in SLC, Utah with my friends.
2. Mt Hotham, Australia. It's not that I love the actual mountain, it's because my memories of it are riding with my family.
3. Anywhere that's on an adventure/road trip with friends. There's nothing better than riding a mountain you've never been to before.
My top 3 tips?
1. Don't go to university/college unless you actually want to. I wasted 2 years of my life trying to force myself into a business marketing degree. I'm much better now that I'm doing what I want.
2. Always travel with a board of some sort. Nothing bores me more than just going to a place to see it. You always have a way better time if you're going there to snowboard, skate or surf.
3. Make sure you get to a punk show every few months. It's good for the soul.
My top 3 goals?
1. Snowboard.
2. Retire when I'm 30 and become Indiana Jones.
3. Do the right thing. Sounds lame I know, but I'm kind of hoping that karma actually works.
My top 3 things I need to get off my chest?
1. No I don't want some of that! Drugs are for people that haven't ridden Milly on a powder day!
2. I'm sick of people telling me they don't know what they want to do with their lives. Sort your shit out.
3. Why the fuck did you go to schoolies week (Australian version of spring break)?! Save your money and go snowboarding in Europe or some shit. You'll learn something.
My top 3 hardest projects?
1. Quitting university.
2. Living on $100 a week in NYC.
3. More recently, filming an Australian snowboard video.
My top 3 items to travel with?
1. My brothers, Marc and Drew. If one of them is along for the ride, it's always going to be life-changing.
2. A Polaroid 1200 camera and a Cosina CX-2. High contrast, vignetted 35mm printed on matte with borders. I've also got shoe boxes filled with Polaroid's from every trip I've ever been on. From my first trip to Europe to a surf trip to Indo I went on a few weeks ago.
3. An Australian accent. It really does open doors for you. Unless you're in Canada or parts of Japan, then people might hate you.
My top 3 people to travel with?
1. Aside from my brothers, my friends Marcus, Andy, Quintin and Reidy. Just good blokes that are family.
2. My friend Chunk. Although I've only traveled with him once, he's the best story teller I know. I could listen to his stories for the rest of my life.
3. One of the Comrie brothers. It's funny, but those guys are meant to be in my life. I love those kids.
